WCA's founding principles are: to provide a rigorous training that ensures the fundamental building blocks of Chinese Herbal Medicine are in place, and to ensure its teachers are clinically experienced

About this course

Please note that this is a sample course and only contains a few modules. The full version of this course is available for purchase.

In this course, Andrew Flower teaches herbs that act on the Exterior; the superficial levels of skin, muscle and channels. They can be classified as sudorifics or diaphoretics, and disperse and expel Exterior Pathogenic Factors including Wind-Heat, Wind Cold, Wind Dampness and Summer Heat. This set of herbs can be subdivided into warm and cold herbs - this course covers the warm herbs.

This course covers the group of mainly warm and pungent herbs that focus on the superficial layer of the body and lung. They are used to treat mild fever, severe chill, headache and body and neck pain, usually with no associated thirst.

When using these herbs, you need to understand dosages and not over prescribe herbs that disperse Qi too much by promote sweating, or consume Yin. As these are Blood moving herbs, it's also important to be cautions when patients have bleeding conditions or are pregnant.

Andrew Flower

Andrew has been a practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) since 1992.

Since graduating he has gained a wide range of experience working in private practice as well as within the NHS and voluntary sector working with people with HIV/AIDS and with drug and alcohol addictions.

He is a past President of the UK Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and has advised the European Herbal Traditional Practitioners Association (EHTPA) on developing research strategies in Europe. In 2009 Andrew completed his PhD at The University of Southampton exploring the role of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of endometriosis. He has published a number of peer-reviewed papers relating to Chinese medicine research, including two Cochrane systematic reviews. He co-ordinated an EU project that prepared guidelines to improve the quality of clinical trials into Chinese medicine.

My research focuses on clinical trials of herbal medicines and the possible role that these traditional medicines could have within mainstream healthcare in the UK. One area of particular interest is the contribution that herbs could make to reducing microbial resistance to antibiotics. We have a lot to learn from herbs and the way they have been used historically...it is a privilege to be part of a University team that is subjecting these old remedies to rigorous, scientific scrutiny.

In 2011 he was awarded a five year NIHR Post doctoral Fellowship to investigate Chinese herbs for the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs) that has resulted in the RUTI trial that started recruiting in February 2016. He runs herbal clinics in London and Hove and has a special interest in providing supportive treatment for people with cancer. He is a founder member of the White Crane Academy and is passionate about the therapeutic potential of herbal medicines and the importance of rigorous training to ensure this potential is realised.
